Caitlin Atkinson is the first photographer this week.  I wasn't a huge fan of her work but this image in preticular really stood out to me.  The division of space, the light, the color.  What she is trying to say is a little cliche but her images are very well done.

Francesca Woodman is a photographer who i can connect with.  She did alot of self portraits in black and white that have the same kind of movement and mystery to them.  Her message is not so straightforward and it seems like the work she did was first and foremost for her and no one else.
Keith Davis Young is a photographer who's work I am not very familiar with but alot of it has this very attractive feel to it.  For example this image is so simple but still so complex.  The subtile vignetting the figure in the dead center the horizon line all of it works perfectly.

These photos are by Peter Eckert.  I chose them because i feel that alot of my work is similar to his maybe not as much in the recent weeks but there is something that really draws me to his style.  The color, the strange light and different approach to the figure.  Everything just seems to work.

Breno Rotatori is a photographer I haven't really heard of.  I recently found his work and I loved it.  The movement of the figure against the fog and the light is very mysterious and intriguing.  I also like how the majority of the image is black and unrecognizable it is an interesting approach to the medium.

These last two photographs are by Rhyan McGinley.  Dom showed me his work and it is unlike anything i have seen.  I love every aspect of it the way he places figures and uses light as well as his use of color and composition.  They just seem original like he really ment what he was doing with these images and maybe thats why i like it so much

This photograph was taken by Hans Bellmer.  He has a quite...unusual aesthetic in his images but I find them to be really interesting.  His division of the body parts as well as the garish colors he presents are a way interest the viewer yet disturb them at the same time.  It is a very different and interestin approach to the figure.

This image was taken by photographer J Bennett Fitts and I chose it because it really reminds me of bridgets work.  The division of space and the geometry is really nice though im not entirley sure what he is trying to say. His series was entitled industrial landscapes or something along those lines but I hope it really isn't that literal.

The Piss Christ by Andres Serrano.  This image is intriguing to me because at first glance with the image and the title you just think he is mocking religion but there are many other levels to not only this image but to all of his work.  This is a dye destruction print and im not really sure what that means but I would like to know how that relates to his imagery and the rest of his process.

This image was taken by photographer richard Misrach.  Now upon first glance i didn't really like this picture, in fact i would say i hated it.  But after looking at it for a while it really began to grow on me.  The simplicity of the composition is really well done along with the pale muted colors.  It all just seems to work for some reason and i really like it.

This image is by photographer Ralph Gibson. sorry it is so small this is the image I wanted and I couldnt find it any bigger.  I just love the mystery within this image why are there hands on the boat, why do they seem like they belong to two different people, why a cannonball?  I also like the strangeness of this composition at first glance you are not sure what to think of this image it is really quite intriguing.

I chose this image by Lisette Model because 1. I am writing about her for lenticular vision class and I feel that all discussion about her and her work will be helpful to me and 2. because i just really like the look and feel of the image.  The gestures of the women, the way the shape in the back of the image connects the two figures the discomfort in the look of the woman on the left .  All of these things contribute to my attraction to this image.

 Alec Soth Assignments

1.
I like this image because of the light i went through all of the pictures for a while and there were some that were "better images" but for some reason I was really drawn to this one. I think it is the light but also the gesture and the expression in the girls face.  Also the composition it reminds me of a dramatic scene from a film which makes me like it that much more.

 2.
This photograph is interesting to me for the way that the person delt with the space.  It seems like it should be wide open and spacious but they managed to give it this almost claustrophobic feeling which i like alot.  The way the grill is the main focal point is very Soth-ian (is that a word?)

3.

I was automatically drawn to this image.  I think because it is kind of like what i do at least to a degree.  The way the figure is silhouetted against the multiple back lights is great and the sense of mystery and even creepiness that you get from it is amazing also i know how annoying that dust can be and I sympathize with him/her.

4.
In my humble opinion this image is amazing, plain and simple.  The gesture of the out of foucus figure in the front along with the bustling city in the reflection AND the words to go along with it.  It is a great image on all fronts as well as a thought provoking one but there is something innocent about the way the words are written that makes it all come together perfectly.

Larry Sultan
The Valley

http://www.americansuburbx.com/2009/12/larry-sultan-valley-1998-2002.html

I chose Sultans work to write about because there is something seriously comic about the work.  He photographs houses in the valleys of hollywood but he is working with porn companies while he is in these homes.  The porn company rents the houses for a few days to shoot their "films" and this is so hilarious to me.  Everyone always accuses the porn industry of all of the wrongs in the world yet so many people give up their houses so willingly for some money.  It is great to see americans sticking to their beliefs and values.  Sultan has managed to get some amazing work out of these sets such as this last image (my personal favorite) of a child's bed room.  And the great thing is he doesn't focus on really crude and shocking images to get his point across he hints at them.  Such as the laungere (spelling?) on the bed with the back of a pornstars head in the mirror.  He addresses the concept of working on this set so non chalant it is just great work and i have so much respect for this photographer in every way.

I think that this is almost a successful photograph.  I think that he has kind of taken the idea of the simplistic everyday a little to far in this image.  It still has very interesting colors and is a unique subject matter but it just doesnt work for me.
This picture is interesting to me mostly because of the way the colors have been muted. The way in which it was shot is also very interesting it is not an angle that you see very often with subject matter like this.  The image has a very somber and depressing feeling which is a great achievement considering what it is of.

This last photograph is successful in my opinion because of the use of color to draw attention to a particular part of the photo.  I also think it is really interesting that he includes a self portrait in his work because it really stands apart from the rest of his imagery.  The way in which the space is divided into thirds by vertical lines is really amazing and well done as well.

Alex Soth
This picture relates to the article because it comes to sazarowski's idea that color can make an image wouldn't work without color or at least would be much less effective.  I like the way that he placed the bus directly in the center of the composition adding to the directness of the image.

Doug Dubois
This image by doug dubois i love the way that the muted color helps add to the feeling of the image.  Also the way in which the subject stands out from the choice of color and location in the composition.

Todd Hido
I am not usually a fan of landscape photography but i am making an exception in the case of todd hido.  His approach to landscape photography is so much different than most that i have seen and it is particularly interesting.
Maybe it is the monochromatic color palette or the view through the window but for some reason this is just a more visually appealing image to me.

William Eggleston

1. The subject is an old car underneath the light of a street lamp
2.In black and white the image would really be as successful because the reason it pops and is appealing to me is that the break lights contrast the overgrowth surrounding the light really well and that would be lost in a black and white image.
3.As I said before I really like the use of complimentary colors from the tail lights and the overgrowth as well as the dramatic overhead lighting and the reflection of the water on the car and ground.
4.He uses very subtile colors in this image with the exception of the break lights which really pop out to the viewer.

1.The subject is a group of people what looks like a family gathering on a hill in remembrance of something or someone.
2.In black and white it would still be a very compelling image the desaturated colors are great and add to the image but it would still work without them.  However there would not be as strong a contrast between the earth and the sky as there is an a color image.
3.I personally really like this image because it reminds me of something that would be in a wes anderson film (he is my personal favorite) the use of desaturated color as well as the placement of the figures and the inclusion of just the tail light is perfect.
4. His colors in many of his images compliment each other or at least come close to it there is a strong contrast of colors which divides the image very well.

1. This subject matter is of a an older woman trying really hard to look younger than she really is as well as a tacky yet visually appealing diner.
2. Same as the images before it it could work as a black and white image but much of the work and thought eggleston has done would be lost.
3.I like this image because of the straight forwardness of the image as well as the use of desaturated complimentary colors
4. Like in the majority of his images Eggleston uses muted complimentary colors and an overall muted color pallette
